Nick Saunders, MC, LAC
Psychotherapist | Addiction Specialist
WHO I AM
I’m a licensed Psychotherapist (LAC) based in Tempe, Arizona. Back in my 20's I was an addiction counselor (LADC) working with teens in Minneapolis, MN. Over 2 years ago I ditched my corporate career so that I could go to grad school and return to counseling. Now that I have graduated, l work in private practice with clients of many ages, backgrounds, and cultural identities. I don't take myself too seriously, and I bring my genuine self to all of my client interactions.
QUALIFICATIONS
I hold a Master's Degree in Counseling from Arizona State University, and I am a Licensed Associate Counselor (LAC) working under direct supervision. I also have a Certificate in Addiction Studies from the University of Minnesota, and I was an addiction counselor (LADC) there prior to moving to Arizona.
CLIENTS
I work with clients ranging in age from adolescence through middle adulthood. My clients come in with a variety of concerns, including anxiety, depression, substance use, low self-worth, chronic stress, behavioral addiction, family dysfunction, relationship issues, school and career problems, parenting difficulties, and several other life challenges.
APPROACH
I primarily utilize Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in my work, which helps clients identify how their thoughts and beliefs influence their emotions and behaviors. I often employ Motivational Interviewing (MI) to help clients resolve their internal conflicts about pursuing change and discover the drive to take action. I also weave in other concepts and philosophies to tailor treatment to each client.
SPECIALIZATION
While I help clients presenting with all sorts of issues, my passion and experience lie in helping clients struggling with mental illness and substance use disorders simultaneously. I have worked extensively in this space, and I am effective at empowering clients to engage in the kind of self-discovery and holistic lifestyle changes needed to achieve long-term recovery. I also really enjoy working with teenagers and helping them navigate the challenges of adolescence.
WHY THE SNEAKERS?
I wear sneakers to work virtually every day. I do this for a couple of reasons - the first being that I just really love them. They’re colorful, comfortable, and they simply look amazing. More importantly, it's vital that my clients feel comfortable and safe in my office. I'm not a fan of pretense, and I believe that introducing a small touch of informality goes a long way in helping my clients feel at ease.
DISCLAIMER
I am licensed to practice counseling in the state of Arizona under direct supervision while working towards my Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) credential. I am unable to offer services to out-of-state clients at this time. The content that I publish online is for informational purposes only and does not constitute medical advice.
